Explore one of Charleston’s 250th celebration events through color, craft, and Lowcountry history. Local artist Kristy Bishop leads this hands-on indigo dyeing workshop at The Dill Sanctuary. Guests will learn about indigo’s history in South Carolina and create their own dyed fabric pieces.

Charleston’s 250th celebration events offer many ways to explore the city’s past. Some are told through lectures. Others are shared through place, craft, and tradition.

The Indigo Dyeing Workshop with Local Artist Kristy Bishop brings South Carolina history to life through a hands-on creative experience. Guests will learn about indigo’s role in the Lowcountry. They will also explore the chemistry of an indigo dye vat. Then, they will create patterns using traditional shibori tie-dye methods.

During the workshop, Bishop will focus on two techniques. The first is itajime, which uses folding and clamped resist. The second is kumo, which uses a bound resist method. Both techniques create bold and beautiful patterns.

Guests will begin with 12-inch cotton squares. After that, they can dye a 24-inch cotton fabric piece and a silk scarf. Participants may also bring a small personal item to dye. Items must be pre-washed and made from natural fibers. Cotton, linen, silk, and wool are best.

The event takes place at The Dill Sanctuary. All materials, instruction, and admission are included. For guests staying at The Restoration Charleston, this workshop offers a creative way to connect with Charleston’s America 250 programming.
