Asheville Community Yoga
This donation-based studio shows us that yoga is for everyone and every body.
Since Asheville Community Yoga opened in 2010, it has become a thriving part of the community. Offering more than yoga, the center has opened its doors to people of all ages, regardless of their finances. Classes are donated based on a suggested $10-$20, but with no minimum, even those without the means can still practice yoga and feel part of something bigger than themselves.
Ahead, we with them about the benefits of yoga in all people’s lives and how their donation-based system is the heart of their mission.
How was Asheville Community Yoga founded? How long have you been in operation?
The studio just celebrated its 14th Birthday in March! It was founded by the want and need for accessible yoga for all. Michael Greenfield, the Executive Director, started this community with three weekly classes, offering a donation-based pay structure. Our mission became clear to offer Asheville a studio based on inclusivity, accessibility, and commUNITY!
Talk to us about your mission, and how the donation-based movement functions.
Asheville Community Yoga is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to making a healthy lifestyle accessible to all. Our vision is to offer a space for individuals to flourish and for community members to connect. We offer services that promote a mind-body-spirit connection such as donation-based movement & meditation classes with mats and props supplied at no charge, training & workshops with financial aid, and affordable pre-loved clothing.
What is it about Asheville that provides the perfect backdrop for mind-body connection?
Asheville is known for its healing nature. It is a place where communities can come together and spend time connecting with nature as well as self. We have an abundance of healers, bodyworkers, yoga teachers, and holistic health practitioners in this town. There is no need for competition because we all have a purpose here.
How have you enjoyed your partnership with The Restoration?
The partnership has been a great way to reach the larger Asheville community and let our community know about donation-based yoga, and share that yoga is for everyone and every body!
