Asheville Community Yoga: A Studio for Every Body

Asheville Community Yoga proves that yoga truly belongs to everyone. This donation-based studio welcomes people of all ages, backgrounds, and financial situations.

Since opening in 2010, the studio has become a meaningful part of the Asheville wellness community. The organization offers more than yoga classes. It provides a space where people can gather, connect, and practice mindfulness together.

Instead of traditional membership fees, they operate on a suggested donation model of $10–$20 per class. However, the studio does not require a minimum payment. As a result, anyone can participate, even if they cannot afford to pay.

Ahead, the team at Asheville Community Yoga shares how their mission began and why accessibility remains at the heart of everything they do.

The Founding

How was Asheville Community Yoga founded?

Asheville Community Yoga recently celebrated its 14th anniversary. The studio began with a simple goal: make yoga accessible to everyone.

Founder and Executive Director Michael Greenfield started the studio with just three weekly classes. From the beginning, he used a donation-based structure to remove financial barriers.

As the community grew, the mission became clear. Asheville Community Yoga would focus on inclusivity, accessibility, and community connection.

Today, the studio continues to welcome anyone interested in exploring yoga and wellness.

A Mission Built on Accessibility

How does the donation-based system work?

Asheville Community Yoga operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its mission focuses on making healthy lifestyles accessible to all people.

The studio provides a welcoming space where individuals can grow while building stronger community connections.

To support this mission, Asheville Community Yoga offers several programs, including:

  • donation-based yoga and meditation classes

  • free yoga mats and props for students

  • teacher trainings and workshops with financial aid

  • affordable pre-loved clothing and wellness items

Because of this structure, students can participate regardless of financial circumstances.

Why Asheville Supports Mind-Body Wellness

What makes Asheville the perfect setting for this work?

Asheville has long been known for its strong wellness culture. The surrounding mountains, natural beauty, and creative community encourage people to focus on healing and connection.

In addition, Asheville has a large network of wellness practitioners. Yoga teachers, bodyworkers, and holistic health professionals all contribute to the city’s supportive environment.

Rather than competing, many practitioners collaborate and support one another.

As a result, Asheville continues to grow as a destination for mindfulness, wellness, and self-care.

A Partnership with The Restoration Asheville

How has the partnership with The Restoration helped your mission?

The collaboration between Asheville Community Yoga and The Restoration Asheville allows the organization to reach more people.

Through this partnership, guests and locals can experience yoga classes hosted at the hotel. These sessions introduce new audiences to donation-based yoga while strengthening the connection between the hotel and Asheville’s wellness community.

Most importantly, the partnership reinforces the studio’s message: yoga belongs to everyone.
