Charleston’s Farmers Markets

Our Favorite Farmers Markets Throughout the Lowcountry

Find yourself wondering what to make for dinner this weekend, but dreading going to the grocery store? Support locally-sourced goods by attending Charleston’s Farmers Market! Whether you’re looking for organic fruits and veggies for your next recipe, or special items to gift your family back home, our farmers’ market is the perfect place to find precious little treasures. Located in Marion Square each Saturday from 8am to 2pm, our farmer’s market has something for everyone, and is the ideal location for planning your weekday meals in advance.

You can feel good about where you’re shopping, because CFM advocates on behalf of lowcountry farmers, growers, artisans, crafters, live performers, and community groups and activities! Sometimes food just tastes better knowing it was grown on your town’s own soil.

Prepare your next family meal from organic fruits and veggies picked by Charleston’s local farmers. Here’s a little recipe to get you started:

This summer risotto is packed with fresh, summer farmer’s market finds. Give yourself approximately 40 minutes to prepare this delish dish.

Summertime Farmer’s Market Risotto

Ingredients:

3 cups chicken or veggie broth

1 TBSP butter or margarine

2 green onions, chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

Salt & pepper to taste

¾ cup arborio rice

¼ cup dry white wine of choice

Small zucchini, chopped

A large tomato chopped & seeded

One ear corn, cut from cob

¼ cup freshly grated parmesan

Handful fresh basil

Directions:

  1. Take broth and pour into large soup pan, bring to a boil, add rice then reduce to low (about 20 minutes)
  2. Melt butter over medium heat in a medium skillet, add green onions, season with salt & pepper to taste. After 3 minutes, add garlic. Sautee for ~30 seconds.
  3. After the rice is done, add green onion mixture to large soup pan, adding in white wine over medium heat.
  4. Mix in ½ cup of broth, stir in until absorbed, continue adding by ½ cups until nearly absorbed before adding more.
  5. Once around ⅓ of broth is left, add zucchini, season with salt and pepper, then continue stirring.
  6. When there’s ¼ broth left, add corn, stir, add tomatoes, stir in last batch of broth.
  7. Take the risotto off the heat then stir in parmesan cheese and fresh basil.
  8. Add salt and pepper to taste then plate!

Risotto can be a heavy dish, but when you use locally sourced, organic ingredients grown with love, it becomes the perfect way to end your summer farmer’s market day. It’s sure to be husband and kid approved!
